THE JAZZ JUNIORS, THE JAZZFOCUS BIG BAND AND THE MUZIEKSCHOOL AMSTERDAM JAZZ DEPARTMENT
The Jazz Department of the MA was set up by Peter Guidi in 1990 and has since grown in popularity and in numbers. The Jazz Department currently consists of seven workshops and two big bands, totaling over 120 jazz students (see below).

THE JAZZ JUNIORS

The Jazz Juniors perform every year at school functions which include appearances at the Paradiso, the Meervaart and the Dag v.d. Muziek.
In April 1993 members of the Jazz Juniors appeared on the VPRO T.V. children's programme 'Villa Achterwerk'.
During 1994 the Workshop performed at the Paradiso, the Amsterdam Stopera, the Tropen Instituut, and the 'Workshop Festival' in Sneek.
In 1995 the Juniors performed on VPRO Radio for the 'Ongehoord' project in Utrecht.
In 1995 performances by the juniors also included the Meervaart, the Dag v.d. Muziek at the Stopera, and participation in the programme of the Amsterdam Freedom Celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
In April 1996 members of the Workshop appeared on NCRV TV's 'Goeiemiddag' programme.
In Feb 1998 members of the Jazz Juniors, together with members from Jazz Workshop III, took part in the NCRV Radio programme 'Passie - Geef jong talent een kans'.
In May 1999 one of the groups (the Joris Roelofs Quartet) appeared on the IKON T.V. youth programme 'Fast Forward'.
In February 2000 the Jazz Juniors performed at the 'Grote Muziek Dag' in the Doelen Theater Rotterdam. The performance was broadcast live on the NCRV Radio programme 'Passie'.
In April 2000 the 'Joris Roelofs Quintet' appeared at the 'Jazz Festival 2000' in Budapest, Hungary. A festival dedicated to young jazz talent and to jazz education at the pre-conservatory level.
In 2001 the Jazz Juniors appeared at the BIM Huis, Amsterdam's temple of jazz, the Dr. Sarphati Huis and at the Bijlmermeer.
In 2002 the Jazz Juniors was invited to play at the North Sea Jazz Festival and became one of the youngest bands ever to play there. After a very busy year, which included the Princess Christina Concours, a concert in the Bim Huis, being chosen as finalists in the Amsterdam Music School Prize, and a special program of South African music in Den Haag, the Juniors played with heart and soul in the North Sea Jazz Festival and received an enthusiastic reception from the audience. Parts of the concert were also recorded for the NOS T.V. JEUGD JOURNAAL (the Dutch t.v. children's Newsreel) and were broadcast the same evening along with interviews from the band members.
In January 2003 the Juniors played at the Amsterdam Jazz Conservatory's Open Day, confirming the ever stronger link between the Jazz Conservatory and the Jazz Department of the music school. In May they performed at the Amsterdam Oosterpark Festival and four of the Juniors performed with the 'Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw' for a live radio broadcast celebrating 30 years of the leading Dutch jazz radio program TROS 'Sesjun'. In June they performed at the Vondel Park open air pavillion, in the Oosterpark Festival, the Theater Souterijn and at their annual concert in the renowned BIM Huis. In the same month the Jazz Juniors won the Publieksprijs, the top award at the Amsterdam Music School Ensemble Competition. The Juniors also performed at a lecture and demonstration given by Peter Guidi on the subject of Pre-Conservatory Jazz Education at the first meeting of the IASJ (International Association of Schools of Jazz) held in The Hague Jazz Conservatory in October.
In 2004 the Juniors were once again finalists in the Amsterdam Music Schools Ensemble Competition where they won the Lichte Muziek Prijs the 1st prize in the light music category. The Juniors also performed in the Oosterpark Festival and at a special children's event in Amsterdam's famous Anne Frank Huis. Members of the Juniors will also be performing with the Jazzmania big band at the North Sea Jazz Festival. They also appeared on 'Zappelin' the Dutch children's television channel. In November they recorded a cd for the Music School as part of the Lichte Muziek Prijs the 1st prize in the light music category. In November the Juniors won the 1st prize in Category 1 at the prestigious Princes Christina Jazz Concours, which includes a performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2005 - plus a master class from Justin di Cioccio of the Manhatten School of Music.
In 2005 the Juniors performed at the
Liberation Day Festival on the Museumplein, Amsterdam. In July they
won the 'Grote Ensemble Prijs', the top award in the Amsterdam
Music Schools Ensemble Competition. In July they also performed at
the 'Gigs For Kids' program during the North Sea
Jazz Festival a part of which was broadcast on the NOS Jeugdjournaal,
the Dutch television news program for children and teenagers. In
July the Juniors also performed in the Junior Jazz Festival
in Langnau, Switzerland which was so appreciated by the jazz
educators present that they invited the Juniors to perform at the IAJE
Conference in New York. In order to get sponsorship
for the trip they appeared in October on the popular, prime-time Paul
de Leeuw Show (Mooi Weer De Leeuw) on VARA
t.v. In December the Jazz Juniors won the 'Grote Prijs',
the top award in the 'Gala Jong Talent Verzekerd'.
In January 2006 the Juniors presented their first cd "It's Cookin'' - DEAD LINK (WORK IN PROGRESS) in front of a packed BIM Huis. The cd is receiveing great reviews which state that the Jazz Juniors are Holland's best ambassadors for jazz music - click here - DEAD LINK (WORK IN PROGRESS) to read the review and article (in Dutch). Also in January the Juniors appeared on NPS Arena, Dutch televisions' arts program. In March the band performed at the huge Poetry and Arts Festival in the Vredenburg Theater, Utrecht. Several articles have been written about the band this year including in the Dutch 'Fluit' music magazine, the 'Kinder Krant' childrens' newspaper and a full page article in the Dutch national newspaper 'Het Parool'. In July the Juniors were once again invited to play at the Junior Jazz Festival in Langnau, Switzerland. In September the Juniors also appeared live on AT5 television while performing at the Seven Bridges Jazz Festival in Amsterdam. They also performed at the Laren Singer Jazz Festival during the same month.
In June 2007 the Jazz Juniors appeared on the Dutch national t.v. program De Werelrd Draait Door. Also in June they appeared in the famous BIM Huis jazz venue in Amsterdam as well as being selected for the final of the AMP Music School Ensemble prize. In July the Juniors appeared together with the younger group Junior Swing and the teenage group the Jazz Generation in the North Sea Jazz Festival For Kids. A special item was broadcast about the Juniors on the Jeugdjournaal, Dutch national televisions' youth news program. A video of the Junior Swing was also recorded live for the national newspaper De Volkskrant's video web site (click on the links below to see these and other recordings of the bands). In September the two youngest bands the Junior Swing and the Jazz Juniors performed at the prestigious Laren Singer Jazz Festival and the Jazz Genration at Amsterdams' famous Seven Bridges Festival.
In February 2008 the Jazz Focus and JazzMania big bands started a series in the Toomler Club in Amsterdam. In March Peters' students won 2 first prizes in the Amsterdam Music Schools Cmpetition bringing the total of prizes won by the ensembles and students of the Jazz Workshops to 46. Also in March Peter began work on the formation of the first Dutch National Jazz Youth Orchestra a project financed and supported by the Dutch Union (NTB) and various national subsidy funds. In May Peter's top big band the Jazzmania big band won the 1st prize in the Dutch National Big Band Competition held during the Meer Jazz Festival. In addition two of the band members won best soloist prizes bringing the tottal of prizes won by Peter's bands to fifty. In June Peter organized the Young Talent Stage during the IJAZZ Festival in Amsterdam which comprised a five hour program of young jazz talent between the ages of 9 and 21. In July Peter's teenage group the Jazz Generation were invited once again to perform at the North Sea Jazz Festival For Kids. In September the Jazzmania big band was invited to perform at the Divino Jazz Festival in Torre del Greco, Naples, Italy. On the 19th October the Jazzmania Big Band celebrated its 20th anniversary in the BIM Huis, Hollands' Temple Of Jazz. Together with the Jazz Focus big band and special guest soloists Jazzmania played to a packed house and performed a great concert in what was an unforgettable evening. Much of the concert was filmed and will appear shortly on the Intrernet, including Youtube. In November the Jazzmania big band and Jazz Focus big bands both won the 1st Prizes in their respective categories in the 3rd International Big Band Competition in Kerkrade. In the Princess Christina Jazz Competition that same month the bands from the Jazz department collected no less than four prizes iuncluding a 1st Prize for the Jazz Focus Big band, a 2nd prize for the Jazz Juniors and the Publics Prize also went to the Jazz Focus Big band.
In March 2009 Peter Guidi organized the Jazz In Paradise concert with four of his prize winning bands performing in Amsterdams' Paradiso concert podium. In 2009 Peter started a series of national auditions as director of the first Dutch National Youth Jazz Orchestra which included members of the Jazz Juniors as guest future jazz talents.Between May and June Peters' students and bands won a total of six prizes in jazz and music Compertitions bringing the total of prizes to sixty nine. In November he recorded two CD's with his ensembles in the Mirasound Studios, Amersfoort. 'Twistin' with the Jazz Juniors and 'The Award Winners' with his ensemble from the Junior Jazz College of the Amsterdam Conservatory.
In June 2010 the Jazz Juniors performed with guest soloist saxophonist Benjamin Herman in the large hall of the renowned Amsterdam Concertgebouw. In July Peter performed with both the Jazz Kidz and the Jazz Juniors at the North Sea Jazz Festival For Kids. In the same month he travelled with the Jazz Juniors to participate in the Junior Jazz Festival, in Langnau, Switzerland.
In 2011 the Jazz Juniors won the first prize in the Amsterdam Music Schools Ensemble Competition. The Juniors also took part in the 'Jazz In Paradise' in the prestigious Paradiso venue in Amsterdam.
In May 2012 the Jazz Juniors too part in the European Union EMU Youth Music Festival in Ferrara, Italy. In June the bands played throughout Amsterdam during the iLike Music Festival, including the Dam Square and the Heineken Square (see photo gallery for pictures). Following in the footsteps of the Juniors at the end of June the Jazz Kidz won a 1st Prize in the AMP Music Prize 2012.
In September the Juniors were invited to perform at the TED Amsterdam congress in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam. Later that month the Jazz Juniors performed at the Junior Jazz Festival held in Delft. In November the Jazz Juniors performed for the arrival of Sinterklaas on the Dam Square in the centre of Amsterdam.
All the Jazz Workshops appear every year at the 'MA JAZZAVOND' held in the BIM Huis Amsterdam's famous 'Temple of Jazz'.

THE GOALS OF THE JAZZ
DEPARTMENT
• To give serious students and part-timers of all ages
the possibility to learn and appreciate jazz music in a relaxed but motivated
environment. ‘Jazz is fun, but serious fun!’
• To offer students the possibility of making collective music in an ensemble and big band setting, while encouraging their individual development as soloists. Jazz music is one of the few art forms where students are required to interact with each other as part of a team, and at the same time are expected to be highly individualistic as soloists. This combination of team-spirit and individual self-expression can be a useful experience for people of all ages, whether they intend to make a career out of playing jazz music or not.
• To provide an environment in which students can put theory into practise as early as possible.
• To offer a wide range of workshops at different levels offering both serious students and part-timers the opportunity to develop their talents with students musicians of their own level.
• To teach the history and stylistic development of jazz music through the use of audio and video material. This provides an opportunity for students to learn the historical context of each stage in the development of jazz and the important historical connections between different jazz styles.
• To offer part-timers the opportunity of gaining a deeper appreciation of jazz music as well as providing jazz enthusiasts with a much better understanding of jazz. In this way we help to create the ‘educated jazz audience’ of the future.
• To provide serious students with a broad jazz education ranging from individual lessons to theory, ensembles and big bands as preparation for the entrance exams to the Jazz Conservatories.
Participants do not have to be students at the Muziekschool Amsterdam or living in Amsterdam to join the workshops.
THE JAZZ WORKSHOPS
The Jazz Workshops consist of five workshops and two big bands for players
of different age groups. The workshops are interconnected allowing students
to progress naturally from one level to the next. The system offers the
unique opportunity for young students to start at the Junior Jazz Workshop
level and progress through the system to the highest level represented
by Jazz Workshop III and the Jazzmania big band. Having completed this
final level students have acquired the necessary theoretical and practical
knowledge to take entrance exams to any of the Netherlands Jazz Conservatories.

THE JAZZ KIDZ

The Jazz Kidz consists of students between 9 and 11 years of age.Seeing the great success the Jazz Juniors has had over the years and the amount of young enthusiastic players wishing to join, it was decided in 2006 to add another and slightly younger band to the educational system. The Junior Swing have only just started but are already flying high and swinging. They will also be performing together with all the other bands of the Jazz Workshops at the famous BIM Huis jazz venue (the Dutch 'Temple of Jazz'). Following in the footsteps of the Jazz juniors the Jazz Kidz have also won 1st Prizes in competitions:

THE JAZZ JUNIORS

The Jazz Juniors Workshop consists of students between 11 and 13 years of age. The only qualifications necessary are basic note reading skills and a reasonable command of the most common major scales. The repertoire consists of major and minor blues together with simple modal tunes taken from the jazz standard repertoire. In order to encourage the juniors to improvise, a repertoire is chosen that is comfortably within the capabilities of the young players. The younger jazz students are made to feel comfortable with improvisation and are encouraged to dare to take those all important first steps. The repertoire is progressively challenging but also fun to play. Included in the curriculum are explanations of jazz ensemble playing, jazz improvisation, jazz phrasing and basic chord structure. The workshop consists of wind instruments and a complete rhythm section providing the juniors with an early opportunity to experiment with solo improvisation in a live ensemble setting. One lesson (1� hours) each term is reserved for the study of jazz history through the use of audio and video material. Once the maximum age of 15 years has been reached it is possible for students from the Junior Jazz Workshop to continue their musical education by advancing to the Jazz Generation.
THE JUNIOR JAZZ UNLIMITED

The Jazz Generation has the same function as the Jazz Juniors but is intended for students between 13 and 17 years of age. This workshop is for players who are already familiar with the basics of jazz improvisation. In this ensemble the players can progress further with improvisation techniques in theory and practise. Once the members reach the age of 15 they can progress to the Jazz Focus big band or earlier if they have advanced through the system rapidly.
JAZZ WORKSHOPS I

The Jazz Workshops I & II are for students of all ages above 15 years who have at least 3 years individual lessons on their respective instrument. A good command of major and minor scales and a basic knowledge of chord construction are recquired. Familiarity with the blues form is preferable, but not essential. The workshops consist of a complete rhythm section and various wind instruments which are divided into separate sections affording the student a practical introduction to the principles of ensemble and big band playing. The repertoire for each workshop is geared to the level of its members. It is from Jazz Workshops I & II that students are selected for the �Jazzfocus� Big Band, where students are given their first opportunity to play in a classic big band formation (4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxes, 4 rhythm section). When the workshop leader determines that students have completed the course it is possible for them to advance to the highest level, Jazz Workshop III.
JAZZ WORKSHOP II

Jazz Workshop III represents the top level of the jazz workshops system. Entrance to Jazz Workshop III is available to members advancing from Jazz Workshop II and also to new students older than 15 years of age who have studied their instrument for a minimum of four years. New students are expected to have a very good technical command of their instrument and should be familiar with the principles of chord construction and jazz harmony. In Jazz Workshop III more complex harmonic structures, together with advanced improvisational techniques, are analyzed in depth. The result is an opportunity for the serious student to play a more technically demanding repertoire, and to analyze and play more challenging chord sequences. As this workshop represents the highest level of the Jazz Department, it is from this workshop that members of the M.S.A. �Jazzmania� Big Band are selected. At this point students are ready to either further their education at one of the Dutch Jazz Conservatories, or to continue their own jazz studies independently.
THE JAZZFOCUS BIG BAND

The �Jazzfocus� big band is set up in the classic big band formation of 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxes and 4 rhythm. It is a training ground where students of all ages can learn the ins and outs of big band playing. The repertoire is selected from the historical big band repertoire and ranges from early Duke Ellington to recent arrangements of modern compositions. After serving their apprenticeship in the �Jazzfocus� big band, students can graduate to the �Jazzmania� Big Band. Whenever the �Jazzmania� goes on tour, or performs at special events, selected teenagers from the �Jazzfocus� are always invited to join the band as guest soloists. In this way they can share the experience and fun of being �on the road�, and learn much from playing with the more experienced musicians of the �Jazzmania�. The Jazz Focus has won eight 1st prizes in national and international big band competitions. THE JAZZMANIA BIG BAND

The M.S.A. �Jazzmania� Big Band is the final step in the educational system of the jazz department of the M.S.A. As well as performing own compositions and arrangements, the repertoire consists mainly of material taken from the most important phases of big band history. Beginning with compositions from Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton, the repertoire follows the historical development of the big band through the music of Count Basie and Woody Herman to Thad Jones and the modern arrangers of today. Throughout the years the big band has been very active in the Amsterdam and Netherlands cultural scene. The Jazzmania Big Band has performed at school, city and national functions and has taken part in national and international festivals and competitions. In twenty years the band has won no less than twenty eight prizes. The Jazz Workshops and Big Bands perform every year at jazz festivals, workshop festivals, cultural events, school functions, and at the �JAZZ AVOND� held each year in the prestigious BIM HUIS, Amsterdam - Holland�s top jazz venue.
